Ideas

Tutorial on another Magic effect: and where to find the effects.

This was a link about more of a short story idea I was having, I wanted to create the illusion of a magic high school and base it in America as I worked, on the concept as you will see below when I was thinking of this idea, I wanted to create a big fight scene to be most of it to be able to show heavy use of post-production and making magic looking like it creates a contact to the characters and I wanted to create the illusion of magic elements and how people could manipulate them. I was going to create this 'future' school feel and making it feel high tech compared to American Schools today. This also meant I would look at American schooling system to make it similar to it so it would still be very recognisable to the audience and they could relate to the characters but also giving the extra elements into the equation. However, this idea soon got scrapped, as you can see below, because I realised that it would take a lot longer than what the time limit was allowing. I decided to go with another way of creating something with these effects as I really wanted to create this type of illusion. In the future when I have a longer time span I will try to create this concept as I really like it and it was based off something I have already written but for this project I needed something that was still pushing my limits and realistic for the time limit, and it is clear to see with the number of people and equipment I would need it was too big of a project for this Unit of the this course.

Youtube Link magic effect. (Using the effects of the same website)

I am thinking about focusing on my editing and post skills, as this is the area I want to go into. I think to go for a graphical orb to representative the 'fire in our souls' the passion that the characters in the video want to let out, I think this would make an intriguing concept to create as then the audience could debate if the magic in the video is really happening or if it is more like our world giving them a view on the possible magic in our own world. This also would be interesting to see how people would see it if I left it open for the individual audience to perceive. If they would say there was magic within the piece or if the audience saw it more as a representation of something, for example, friends that support you, others that are going through the same problems as you est.

Idea Timeline:

Here I will be logging my ideas and how my idea developed to my final piece.
Assassination Classroom is an anime but it also was made into a live action tv show too, it is about the underachieves being earth last hope agents this alien but he is giving them a chance to kill him by being their teacher until graduation.
I was looking more to the live action and having the style of the guns mixed with the look of the other anime the irregular, this anime is about going to a magician's high school learning to hone in their magical abilities.

Then I start thinking about the other types of film that had the style of fighting I was going for, and the training sequences in the vampire academy was the kind of training I wanted in the training side of the lessons through the short film.

I also looked at the magic in the shadow hunters, specifically the magic of the character Magnus Bane. He is a warlock and he is powerful, the magic style is what I was originally looking at and how it reacts to the environment.

I also looked at the fighting in shadow hunters, as it integrated magic and fighting together. I liked this style and the aspect of 'runes' to enhance their abilities as fighters, however, I thought that I would go for a different style of Runes and rather than putting them on themselves I will make it more of a casting spell.

Even though shadow hunters magic and fighting were like I wanted the high school to seem darker and twisted. This is how I started to look at Riverdale high school drama. It is a dark mystery going in the small town. I liked the dark twist on this high school so I think the best way to style the mise en scene for my piece.

My idea slowly grew too big for the time limit. So I looked to my other ideas and I wanted to make a musical song into a music video. Specifically, the musical dear Evan Hansen as it has a message in it that I related to so much. The message the musical gives is about mental health and that people shouldn't go through it alone.

Fans of the musical made many dedicated videos of the song, specifically, about you will be found as it is the main song of the musical and the most popular being the internet choir and the youtube channel 'made with lemons' music video that is below.

Other people have done covers and made female versions and acoustic versions of the song but none of the covers had the feeling that I wanted. This is why I have decided to get help into creating my very own cover of the song. I have asked my friend's holly and Ian to help me with the cover.

Mise en Scene:

For my mise en scene, I wanted to continue the idea of high school and teenager struggling to fit in this is why I wanted the dance scene to have a high school hallway backdrop. I also wanted to give it a free feeling so I didn't want to have a uniform, so I am going for a more American school look as. out shows and 'school scenes' in the music video, film or TV so I think this would be the best way to show the school to my audience as it is the most recognisable style of school in the media.

Context and Cultural:

Context:

the music videos context is going for audiences that have or are trying to understand mental health. For example

What I am creating?
I am creating a short film about a story I wrote when I was 15, I am going to make it into a short film and just make it a short story compared to the actual book. It is about two young people who were trained to be assassins. They go on their first mission without their group and what seems like a simple mission would get more and more complicated by the second.
Who is it for?
My target audience is similar to fandoms of the Divergent which I found to be American Female in their late teens the to early 20s. NOTE-Do more research for this just to make it more specific.
What I am using to create the piece? What it will look like?
It will be created with simple CGI and make it have somethings that have the look of 'impossible' feel to it but also not making it look overly CGI like my last attempt in last years FMP.
Explain the equipment that I will need and what I will use it for?

  • The equipment I will need to created this project is: Panasonic cameras- 2-3
  • DSLR for BTS
  • Tie mic for outside studio scenes
  • Directional mic in studio and internal mic on cameras.
  • Studio Lights (coloured and white)
  • LED Lights
  • Tripods for Panasonic cameras.
People needed-
Crew-
  1. Camera 1
  2. Camera 2

Scenes I am thinking of doing-

  • Getting the 'mission'
  • The outside scene, Forrest like
  • 'School' entering
  • Lesson on tactics in the fields
  • Bullying scene
  • Fight scene
  • Problematic thing
  • Solution
  • Final 'battle'
  • Ending / conclusion

Project Title
Final Major Project- Dear Evan Hansen 'You Will be found'
Unit No
13
Section 1: Rationale/Review (Level 2 approx. 50 words, Level 3 approx. 100 words)
What I am creating?
I have decided to go with my first and original idea, with some added and developed thoughts from my other ideas, which was to make a music video for the powerful and meaningful music from the musical 'Dear Evan Hansen' called 'You Will Be Found'. The main reason I want to do a music video is that I want to compare my last and first project on this course and comparing them to show how I have grown, the skills I now have and how my ideas have changed/developed over this two-year course.
Who is it for?
This music video will be going in the style of a mixture of music videos visually but the song itself has come from a real musical so I will be making it so it is designed for the audience of the musical, as it is a song they enjoy and it is the song of.
What I am using to create the piece? What it will look like?
I am going to go for a simplistic view of my music video, I am going to make it have some CGI like the music video 'firework' by Katy Perry. I am also using the music videos 'Shawn Mendes - Belief' and 'The All-American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret' and the way they present the feelings of the 'characters' within the music video.
Explain the equipment that I will need and what I will use it for?
I will be using 2-3 Panasonic cameras and legs, for shooting the piece; studio, for lighting and scenes involving effects; LEDs, for lighting places that need to be lit; directional mic, for absent recordings and sound bites of the environment to make it feel like a more professional shoot.
People needed-
These are the list of people I am going to need
Crew-
1-3 cameras
Cast-
1 Female Lead
lyrical artist, female
Instrumental cover artist, N/A (note after making this they were male)
around 50 /50 split of the male and female cast. around 5 female and 5 men but as many as possible.
Section 2: Project Concept (Level 2 approx. 100 words, Level 3 approx. 200 words)
How I create my piece e.g. mocumentury- investigate?
I am creating a music video for the song Dear Evan Hansen single's song You Will bE Found. This song is the main song and is used in the promotional aspect for the so by using it as a hashtag- #youwillbefound.
What theory am I using? e.g. Auteur
I am using Narrative theory as I am looking at it not only as a song but what it originally was telling the audience in the musical and then taking it to see if my message is similar to theirs and if I portray my own message using the song if it is clear to the existing and non-existing fans of the song. What I mean by this is my question I will be trying to answer will be: Does changing the way the narrative of the song is shown create a new view of the song for existing listeners of the song? Also, do new and existing fans of the song see the same narrative and understand what the creator was trying to say to the audience?
Create a list on how I will create this piece?
I am going to visually (camera/ production wise) create a simplistic mid shot on a heavy spotlight on the main lead, the singer, seemingly in a black abyss singing to the audience directly as if they are on a stage or talking to a mass of people but is looking at you as an individual.
I am also going to shoot another take of the song in a different environment and costume, then putting a created graphic over it to show the illusion that the video you are watching is going viral. I will use a slightly different graphic for the 3 different 'youtube videos' that are in the video.
Then I am going to take simple shots of others looking up, holding signs with negative and positive messages on them. Showing people they are not allowed this also gives the audience of replies to the video that the main character posted.
For the credits, I also want to break the fourth wall by making the masses cast (the extras) as a blooper video within the music video. I thought this would look good because everyone would be laughing positive and seem out of character, this would seem like a relaxed setting and show the audience the cast having fun.
The last thing I want is for the vocals and the music producer to get a special credit sequence as I wanted to say thank you for their help. This footage I wanted to look very homemade and candid shots. This is to give the audience a, 'originally started here' feel.
Section 3: Evaluation (Level 2 approx. 50 words, Level 3 approx. 50 words)
my strengths of this project will be the simple shots, giving me more time to edit and less chance of messing up the shot. I also will have an advantage on the fact that their is not many people needed at one time, apart from the dance scene, this will make it easier for organising production days to suit everyone needed. I also think the dance scene will be quite simple as I just need to have people dancing so it is not like I need specific people as it is all about diversity.
my weaknesses will be the time limit for the audio as I am less in control of how long that will take, this also affects the lip singing as I don't know how close the cover will be to the original song, which is the song version I used to lip sing, so editing it to fit the cover may be challenging. I also will only have a relatively short time to create the 'orbs' of light so the more editing time I have the better as the edit is going to be very time-consuming.
I will be gaining more skills within editing, working in a team and relying on others to work to a deadline, green screen work and audio syncing. Since I am wanting to go into editing and post-production I am going to focus on more complex editing and simpler production to be able to give myself more time in post.
Proposed Research Sourceand Bibliography (Harvard Format)
25th February 2019- Assignment brief went live
 Week One-
  26th- Working through ideas
27th- Got to my 5 different ideas.
28th- Narrowed down to top 3 ideas
29th- Decided on Assassin High and beginning my pitch.
Week Two-
I finished making my pitch and what I was going to say and do, started looking into the research I was planning and making my first draft of pre-production and surveys I was going to start creating to get into the production as quickly as I could. I then pitched this idea on the Friday of week two
Week Three-
In week two I changed my idea to a music video and started to look into why this was a good idea, why I couldn't get the old idea to the standard I wanted it and what I was doing and why.
Week Four & Five-
Started to plan out pre-production and research for my new idea and changed my unit 12 to still link to my FMP idea. I am looking into Narrative theory and why it is needed in film and TV. I am trying to come up with just as an interesting and relevant question about narrative theory for music videos.
Week Six-
The following dates are when I am/ did filming. This week I booked my location and equipment for these dates and I know what I am filming for each and how I want it to look. I also have made sure for when I need people they are available.
Production Dates
Wednesday 17th April 2019-
Audio recoding 1 (didn't go to plan)
Tuesday 23rd April 2019-
Audio recording 2 finished audio
Shoot 1- location the studio
Thursday 24th April 2019-
Shoot 2- location my house
Friday 25th April 2019-

Shoot 3- location the studio
I also prepared and pitched my idea to the music class. This was because the song I chose, Dear Evan Hansen you will be found, is sung by a male singer originally but my audience and survey suggest that a female cover would be more effective to get the message across.
Week Seven-
This week I am finishing up my pre-production and research for my new idea to get ready for the production dates and made sure I knew what I was doing.
Week Eight-
This week I am organising and recording the audio with a new singer, as my first singer didn't get back to me after the break, they also didn't give me any contact details so I assumed that they could no longer help me. Luckily I found another singer under short notice that could help me. We organised to see each other within the break and that didn't go to plan as we couldn't get access to the sound booth. So Tuesday 23rd she came in and we recorded the whole lyrical parts of the song. She sadly couldn't make it to any of the production shoots due to transport issues but she did, later on, decided, make an appearance within the credits of the song.
Week Nine-
I started to go into post-production by getting assets that I wanted to use. I did this by organising the footage that I had already and the audio to be sent off to Ian to get the audio into post-production too.
Week Ten & Eleven
I am editing now and getting the last of production done, as I had to change some parts of the plotline for convenience and time restraints on what I was originally planning to create.
Week Twelve-
I am finishing off my edit and putting it on my blog, it is now done for the deadline this week and I am fine tuning my blogger as I need to change some production logs on what I ended up doing and updating my changes, problems and evaluations as I want to make use they are as accurate as they can be
Week Thirteen-
I am finishing off my evaluation and making small changes to some wordings and things I have done, I am also going through some of the documents that I made to make sure that I have put all my research and written work I did off blogger onto blogger.
